Awang Had Salleh Graduate School of Arts and Sciences

Master of Education (MEd.) - School of Education and Modern Languages.

The Master of Education (Curriculum & Instruction), (Instructional Technology), (ELT), (Educational Psychology) and (Islamic Education) are offered by the School of Education and Modern Languages, College of Arts and Sciences. These programmes are offered in full-time mode (in UUM Sintok Campus) OR part-time mode.

PROGRAMME DURATION

Full-time: 4-6 semesters
Part-time: 6-10 semesters

Applicants for the Master’s Programme under the UUM College of Arts and Sciences must possess:
Bachelor’s degree with honours (or equivalent) from recognized universities with a CGPA of 2.75 above; OR
Bachelor’s degree with a CGPA of 2.5 and 3 years teaching experience; OR
Other qualifications as may be recognized by the UUM Senate; AND
Professional qualifications (Cert. Ed. or Dip. Ed.)
M.Ed. (Curriculum and Instruction, Instructional Technology, Educational Psychology and Islamic Education)
Bachelor’s degree with honours (or equivalent) from recognized universities with a minimum of CGPA of 2.75; OR
Bachelor’s degree with a CGPA of less than 2.75 and the required teaching experience (1 year teaching experience = 0.05 CGPA point); OR
Other qualifications as may be recognized by the UUM Senate; AND
Professional qualifications (Cert. Ed. or Dip. Ed.)

English Qualifications for M.Ed. (Curriculum & Instruction, Instructional Technology, Educational Psychology and Islamic Education)
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 500 in the paper-based test OR 59 in the internet-based test; OR
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) with the minimum score of 5.5 in all components.
Applicants for Master of Education specializing in English language Teaching must possess the following:

a) Local Applicant
a bachelor’s degree with honours in TESL/TESOL/TEFL/Linguistics/English language or any other related field from any institutions of higher learning recognised by the University Senate; or
a bachelor’s degree with honours and have at least 3 years of teaching experience in English Language; or
any other equivalent qualifications recognised by the University Senate; and
a professional qualification (i.e. a diploma or certificate in education).
*Note: Candidates who do not meet the above minimum requirement may be requested to attend an interview by the Academic Committee at the respective Schools.

b) International Applicant
a bachelor’s degree with honours in TESL/TESOL/TEFL/Linguistics/English language or any other related field from any institutions of higher learning recognised by the University Senate; or
any other equivalent qualifications recognised by the University Senate; and
fulfil the English language requirement as set by the University Senate with the following score:
575 in TOEFL; or
6.5 in IELTS
ADDITIONAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENT

Students without professional qualification (Bachelor of Education/ Diploma in Education/ Certificate of Education) are required to attend and pass the following pre-requisite courses with at least a B grade before being allowed to proceed with the Master of Education courses.

Research

Students are required to: 

  • Present and defend the proposed research to a committee;
  • Present progress reports of research work at colloquiums arranged by the Graduate School or College;
  • Attend a viva session to defend the thesis; and 
  • Submit a final thesis.

Students without sufficient research skills and knowledge are required to attend and pass the following courses with at least a B grade before being allowed to defend their proposal (i.e. within the first two semesters of their enrolment): 

  • SZRZ6014 Research Methodology;
  • SCLE6014 Academic Writing; and/or
  • Any other course as determined by the supervisor or Academic Committee.
