USM STUDENT WINS 1000 EURO AT THE 2016 NATIONAL LEVEL 3 MINUTE THESIS (3MT)

A doctoral student from Universiti Sains Malaysia’s (USM) Centre for Drugs Research, Ms. Nur Azzalia Kamaruzaman, 28, bagged a cash prize of 1000 Euros and a trophy when she won the 'Best of the Best' for her thesis entitled ‘B- Carboline: A New Reality for Leukaemia’ at the 2016 National Level 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) held at the Seminar A Hall, UUM Convention Centre recently.

The prize presentation ceremony was officiated by UUM Vice-Chancellor, Prof Dato' Seri Dr Mohamed Mustafa Ishak and accompanied by the Executive Editor of Springer Nature, Mr. William N. Achauer; Dr Aishah Abu Bakar, Director of Academic Development Management Division, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MOE) and Dean of Awang Had Salleh Graduate School of Arts and Science, Prof Dr Norshuhada Shiratuddin.

The Vice-Chancellor in his closing speech said that UUM was proud to be chosen to host the 2016 National Level 3MT which had brought together a total of 55 researchers or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students from 20 universities across the country.

"Since its launch in 2008 at the University of Queensland, Australia, the competition has already been adopted at the international level and continues to spread throughout Australia and New Zealand, and to the other parts of the world involving 18 countries including Malaysia and UUM is pleased to be listed on the3MT website.

"3MT Competition is an academic competition that challenges PhD students involved to present their thesis topic in three minutes in front of the audience and the jury, which also indirectly helps them to improve their communication skills involving the community," he said.

He added that UUM became the host of the 3MT as well as a participant for the first time provided a platform for participants to highlight their great ideas in their research study.

Three categories were contested in the 3MT namely Social Sciences, Science and Technology and Engineering where first place winner received cash MYR1, 500 and a trophy, second place received MYR1, 000 and a trophy and third place received MYR700 and a trophy, while the 'Best of the Best' received 1000 Euro and a trophy, would represent the country at the International Level 3MT in Brisbane, Australia in September.

For the Social Sciences category, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) came in first place, followed by University of Malaya (UM) in second place and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in third.

For the Science and Technology category, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), represented by Ms. Nur Azzalia topped the category, followed by the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in second place and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) in third.

As for the Engineering category, UTM grabbed the top honours, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) came in second and third place respectively.

All participants were assessed by five invited jury namely Mr. Caleb Foong Tack Joan of Fusionex Corp Sdn Bhd; Ms. Kudsia Kahar from Kudsia & Co; Mdm. Nor Azzura Azizul Azman from TV3; Dr Poh Lee of Hilti Asia IT Services Sdn. Bhd. and Mr. William N. Achauer of Springer Nature.
