Universiti Utara Malaysia Main Campus is located at Sintok, 48 kilometers north of Alor Setar, the state capital of Kedah Darul Aman and 10 kilometers east of Changlun, a town on the North-South Highway. The 1,061 hectares campus is surrounded by a beautiful scenery of the tropical rain forest and hills. The Sintok and Badak Rivers run through the campus. It is one of the most beautiful and sophisticated campuses in the region.
The campus is also located near Bukit Kayu Hitam, a town close to the Malaysia- Thai border. This town is the main entrance into Malaysia from the Sultan Abdul Halim Airport, Alor Setar. The nearest railway station is located in Arau, Perlis.
The RM 580 million campus started its operation on 15 Spetember 1990. It comprises student residential halls (DPP) capable of accommodating 20,000 students.. Many of these DPP are named after multinational companies, namely MAS, TENAGA NATIONAL BERHAD, TELEKOM, PROTON, PETRONAS, TRADEWIND, EON, GUTHRIE, MISC, PERWAJA, MAYBANK, BANK MUAMALAT, YAYASAN AL-BUKHARY, BANK RAKYAT AND SME BANK.
The main buildings in the campus are the academic buildings, the library, the administrative buildings, the mosque, the Varsity Mall, the Students' Union Building, the sports complex, the Mu'adzam Shah Hall and the Tan Sri Othman Hall. The university also provides 304 units of housing facilities to staff members.
The university also has 107 hectares of forest reserve for tourists, a 9-hole golf course,a campus ground, jungle tracks, an archery range and deer park.
